Schmeichelnde Lüfte wehen mich an!              Caressing sweet winds enticing me on!
Fort aus der Prosa Lasten und Müh'              Far from my prosaic burdens I'll be
Zieh' ich zum Lande der Poesie.                 Drawn to the country of Poetry
Gold'ner die Sonne, blauer die Luft,            Golden the sun, the sky without care;
Grüner die Grüne, würz'ger der Duft!            Greener the grass, more spicy the air.

Dort an dem Maishalm, schwellend von Saft,      There, by the corn stalks, swelling with sap,
Sträubt sich der Aloe störrische Kraft;         Aloe stands proudly with bristly cap.
Ölbaum, Cypresse, blond du, du braun,           Olive and cypress; the dark and the light
Nickt ihr wie zierliche, grüßende Frau'n?       Nod you like debuttantes, dainty and kind?
Was glänzt im Laube, funkelnd wie Gold?         What gleams in foliage, shining like gold?
Ha! Pomeranze, birgst du dich hold?             Ha! it's the or'nge; you think yourself bold?

Trotz'ger Poseidon, warest du dies,             Stubborn Poseidon, 'tis you indeed!
Der unten scherzt und murmelt so süß?           Chuckling and murmuring there in the deep?
Und dies, halb Wiese, halb Äther zu schau'n,    And this ethereal meadow of dreams,
Es war des Meeres furchtbares Grau'n?           Was this the wrathful, terrible sea?
Hier will ich wohnen, Göttliche du:             Here I shall stay, to live here with Thee;
Bringst du, Parthenope, Wogen zur Ruh'?         Bringst Thou, Parthenope, rest to the sea?
Nun dann versuche es, Eden der Lust,            Eden so blissful, pray practise thy art;
Eb'ne die Wogen, die Wogen auch dieser Brust!   Still too the tempest, 
						     the tempest that storms in my heart!

Grüner und grüner Matten und Feld,              Greener and greener meadow and dale,
Froher das Leben, schöner die Welt!             Life is more cheerful, world is more hale!
Fort aus der Sorge düsterem Thal,               Far from the worries casting a pall
Hin in des Frühlings sonnigen Saal!             I'm drawn to springtime's brilliant hall!
Bunter die Blumen, süßer der Duft,              Sweeter the flowers' perfume so fair;
Heit'rer der Himmel, frischer die Luft!         Brighter the heavens, fresher the air!

Sieh', wie die Gemse hüpft und das Reh,         Frolicsome deer and goats wander free;
Schau', wie der Bach hinrauscht in den See!     Look how the brook tumbles down to the sea!
Zu der Lawine dumpfem Getön                     To the cascading, gurgling drone
Hallen Schalmeien lieblich und schön.           Shepherd pipes echo with delicate tone.
Hüllet der Nebel die Thäler hier ein,           Billows of fog clothe the valleys below;
Oben ist Freud', ist wonniger Schein.           Higher, a joyful, brilliant glow.

Drüben und droben wär' ich so gern!             There and beyond, is where I should be;
Thäler und Berge, wie seid ihr so fern!         Valleys and mountains, you're so far from me!
Ach, und wie ferne ist Frieden und Ruh',        Ah, and how far away peaceful respite
Ach, und wie ferne, Liebe, bist du!             Ah, and how distant Love's sweet delight!
Träumend nur seh' ich Rosen noch blüh'n,        Only in dreams are roses at hand;
Träumend der Alpen Zinken nur glüh'n.           Only in dreaming do alpine peaks stand.
Thäler und Berge, wie seid ihr so fern!         Valleys and mountains, you're so far from me!
Drüben und droben, droben wär' ich so gern!     There and beyond, beyond, is where I need to be!
