Study in E-flat - Fernando Sor This pretty little piece in E-flat is one of Sor's finest studies, and demonstrates his knack for writing astoundingly beautiful "songs without words" in a didactic format. When opening the NWC file, you'll see a single staff, as might be expected for guitar music. However, this staff is muted, and is essentially only there for scoring purposes. What's more, it's actually a "layering" of two staves, allowing the rather fancy typesetting for this piece. Rather, each string of the guitar is treated as a separate instrument, and is assigned its own staff and midi channel. The result is, I think you'll agree, a very faithful midi "performance" the likes of which would have been impossible on a single channel. In this piece, the effort at realism was taken a step further from previous midi performances by including string noises, reverb, a layered "harp" sound to augment the pull-offs and hammer-ons, and judicious mod wheel use on sustained single notes. The remaining staves can, of course be "unhidden" so you can see what was done here. A midi file is also provided, exported from the six "sounding" staves, for those without NWC. Be forewarned if you try to import the midi file into a sequencer program - the result will not be anything like what you'd expect! The fingering is largely editorial, based on my preferences. Feel free to use whatever works for you. I've also taken editorial liberties by adding notes and slurs, indicated with parentheses. In the second repeat there is additional ornamentation, again of a strictly "performance" nature. Fred Nachbaur, July, 2000
